POBNEWS24, Benapole (Jessore) Sept 5, 2025 : Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) observed the 54th martyrdom anniversary of Lance Naik Shaheed Bir Shrestha Noor Mohammad Sheikh on Friday. This fearless soldier sacrificed his life in the great liberation war of 1971. At that time, he was working in the EPR. To keep his contribution forever memorable, this day is observed with due dignity like every year.

BGB’s Jessore Battalion (49 BGB) Deputy Commander Major Noor Uddin Ahmad placed a wreath at the grave of Bir Shrestha Shaheed Lance Naik Noor Mohammad Sheikh in Kashipur this morning. At the time, a well-equipped team of BGB provided a ‘Guard of Honor’. Later, Fateha was recited and special prayers were offered for the eternal peace of the soul of Bir Shrestha Shaheed Lance Naik Noor Mohammad Sheikh.
At this time, other BGB officers and soldiers, Bir Shrestha’s family, local public representatives, dignitaries and journalists from print and electronic media were present.
It is worth mentioning that Bir Shrestha Noor Mohammad Sheikh was born on February 26, 1936 in Maheshkhola village of Narail district. His father’s name was Mohammad Amanat Sheikh and his mother’s name was Jennatunesa. Noor Mohammad Sheikh joined the then East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) on February 26, 1959. He actively participated in the Liberation War under Sector No. 8, Jessore in 1971. After 25 March 1971, when the Mukti Bahini started to be organized, he was given the responsibility of the captain of a camp set up in Goalhati village of Jhikargachha police station in Jessore district. Noor Mohammad Sheikh was martyred on 5 September 1971 while resisting the Pakistani invading forces at one end of Goalhati village. While he was patrolling the Chutipur base not far from Goalhati village with two companions, the Pakistani forces attacked them. Noor Mohammad Sheikh tried his best to protect his patrol group. When his fellow soldier Nannu Mia was seriously injured in the firing of the Pakistani forces, Noor Mohammad Sheikh kept firing at the enemy forces with his LMG in his hand and his seriously injured companion on his shoulder and went to a safe place. Suddenly, his knee was shattered by the barbaric mortar attack of the Pakistani forces. Noor Mohammad Sheikh continued to fire despite being seriously injured so that his companions could reach the defense base and at one point he fell to his death. This brave warrior was buried in Kashipur village of Sharsha police station in Jessore. Nur Mohammad Sheikh saved the lives of his fellow warriors at the cost of his own life. For his immense heroism, courage and patriotism, the Bangladesh government awarded him the highest honor, the title of ‘Bir Shrestha’.
