Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed at various important places to maintain law and order. Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Mohammad Yunus said in a speech to the nation that Bangladesh will observe a national mourning day on Saturday. In his speech, he said that Osman Hadi was the coordinator and frontline fighter of July 24. The nation will observe a day of mourning in his memory.
Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inquilab Manch, died in a hospital in Singapore on Thursday night. This July fighter was preparing to contest the upcoming national elections. On December 12, two masked assailants shot him in the capital Dhaka. Although he was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College, his condition was critical, and he was later taken to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka and from there to Singapore. He died on Thursday while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Protests spread to various places including the capital Dhaka when news of his death came. An ‘anti-aggression rally’ was held in Shahbagh in Dhaka to protest the killing of Osman Hadi. After Friday prayers, protesters gathered there in small processions from Dhaka University, Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and various nearby mosques. On Wednesday, Singapore’s Foreign Minister called Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus to inform him that Hadi’s physical condition was critical. After that, the hospital authorities announced his death on Thursday.
At that time, some Islamist parties and DUCSU leaders declared Shahbagh ‘Hadi Chattar’. They demanded justice for the murder of Osman Hadi. Protests were also seen in Gazipur, not far from Dhaka. They blocked the road after Friday prayers and demanded exemplary punishment for the murder. Protests were also held in Sylhet. The law enforcement agencies have said that security measures have been strengthened to prevent any untoward incident. This information was given in a message sent by the BGB on Friday afternoon. The message said that in addition to the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area, Karwan Bazar, and the area adjacent to Hotel Intercontinental, BGB patrols and positions have been strengthened in several other important places in the city to prevent possible chaos and violence.
Meanwhile, the social platform ‘Nagorik Samaj’ has protested against the attacks and vandalism in various places in Bangladesh. The protest has demanded the resignation of the Home Affairs Advisor. On Friday, representatives of the civil society condemned these attacks in front of the offices of the Daily Star and Prothom Alo and Chhayanaut Bhaban.
They said that the Home Affairs Advisor has failed to take those involved in the attack on Inqilab Mancha convener Osman Hadi under ‘exemplary punishment’. He has also failed to provide security to the media and cultural institutions. They called on him to resign, taking responsibility for these.
At the same time, they also called on political parties and the media to be more vocal against these injustices.
According to Inqilab Mancha sources, the plane carrying the body of Hadi, who died while undergoing treatment in Singapore, landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 5:48 pm on Friday. From there, his coffin was taken to Dhaka University Central Mosque for the public to pay their respects. At this time, lakhs of people stood in an orderly manner on both sides of the road from the airport to Shahbagh to pay their last respects to the July hero. Hadi’s namaz-e-janaza is scheduled to be held near the Jatiya Sangsad area on Saturday afternoon.
