POBNEWS24, Kolkata, May 14, 2026 : Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee surprised everyone by appearing in the Calcutta High Court wearing a black lawyer’s cap. On Thursday morning, she argued on behalf of the party in the post-poll violence case before the division bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Pal and Justice Parthasarathy Sen.

Mamata appeared in the court at around 10:15 am and sought permission from the Chief Justice to argue against the BJP government by raising the issue of Uttar Pradesh. She said that she has been a lawyer since 1985 and wants to argue as such.
Immediately, she argued against the BJP government by raising the issue of Uttar Pradesh. She said, ‘This is not Uttar Pradesh, it is Bengal. So save the people of Bengal.’

While the arguments were going on inside the court, BJP workers and supporters kept shouting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans outside. When Mamata Banerjee was leaving after the hearing, a group of lawyers and the crowd present started chanting ‘Chor Chor’ slogans at her.
It is to be noted that about 6 people were killed and several Trinamool Congress party offices were attacked in the post-poll violence in West Bengal. Despite the BJP government taking strict action, several public interest litigations were filed in the Calcutta High Court alleging post-poll violence.

Mamata claimed in the court that people from 92-year-olds to newlyweds are being evicted from their homes and that Scheduled Castes and minorities are being continuously threatened. Alleging police inaction, she said that many people are being forced to file complaints online instead of going directly to the police. She made a heartfelt plea to the Chief Justice to ensure the safety of the common people of the state.

In the same case, CPIM leader and lawyer Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya also argued against the BJP government and protested against the demolition of hawker shops in the New Market area with bulldozers.
State Police lawyer Dheeraj Trivedi claimed that the police were taking strict steps to control the situation and that nine people had already been arrested. He proposed to link the case with the old post-poll violence case and send it to a larger bench and informed the court that the police were taking action against the culprits.

As chaos prevailed in the court premises, Mamata Banerjee herself drew the attention of the Chief Justice and informed him about the problem of exiting. Mamata told the Chief Justice, “Look at the situation outside. What is happening! It is difficult to exit from here.”

Finally, she was able to leave the area despite facing obstacles at every step due to the heavy presence of police and security guards and protests.
