POBNEWS24, Desk report Dhaka, Oct 6, 2026 : Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi went to Delhi on an unscheduled visit and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting took place at around 1 pm local time on Tuesday.
According to diplomatic sources in Delhi, Dinesh Trivedi went to Delhi to convey a message about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to India and Dhaka’s current position on various issues of Bangladesh-India relations.
The Indian High Commissioner arrived in Delhi on a flight from Dhaka on Monday night. However, no official information was given by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi or the Prime Minister’s Office about his visit and meeting with the Prime Minister.
Dinesh Trivedi is a politically appointed diplomat in India. He was appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh in April last year. He is a former Indian Railways Minister and a long-time politician.
Recently, discussions are underway between the two countries regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to India. On September 30, Dinesh Trivedi said that Tarique Rahman will visit India, but the date of the visit has not been discussed yet. He also commented that the two countries should be given time for necessary preparations.
Various unresolved issues in the relations between the two countries are also under discussion. These include the demand to send former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh, various issues including water distribution and trade. On October 3, Dinesh Trivedi said that the issues that are unresolved between Bangladesh and India need to be discussed regularly, and progress should be made on the basis of mutual respect and trust.
Regarding sending Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi recently said that the matter is in the legal process and it is not possible to give a specific time frame for this.
Meanwhile, the Ganges Water Sharing Agreement signed in 1996 is also scheduled to expire in December this year. The report mentions that discussions between the two countries on the renewal of the agreement have not yet progressed.
