Maria Racer’s struggle for freedom of the press and freedom of expression has been recognized in the Nobel Peace Prize. This year, Maria Resa, a Filipino, received the world’s highest honor jointly with Russian journalist Dmitry Andreyevich Murtav.
Maria Racer began her career as a journalist in 1986, according to AFP. Since then, he has kept his pen working for justice and against injustice. As a reporter as much as possible, nothing in his life was elusive. At the age of 56, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Maria Resa, former head of CNN’s Manila and Jakarta bureau, founded the online news website Radapler in 2012. The purpose is to keep a close eye on the activities of President Rodrigo Duterte’s government. Radhapler has been publishing one investigative report after another on the authoritarian Duterte, including the bloody operation of the government forces to eradicate drugs. Naturally, he fell into the wrath of the government. One lawsuit after another was filed against Maria Racer. Threats keep coming online.
The situation became such that Maria continued to make various negative remarks in the name of the racer, attacking. He even called the rapper established by the racer a ‘fake media’.
In addition to Maria Resa, there are two others involved in the establishment of Radhapler. Maria Racer has been charged with one count after another, including foreign nationals investing, tax evasion, and publishing defamatory news. Naturally, this hostile activity of the Philippine government brought his fight to the forefront of the international arena.
In 2016, Maria Resa was named one of Time’s ‘Person of the Year’ by the influential US magazine Time for her role in the fight for media freedom. However, after Duterte was arrested by the government, international public opinion was formed in favor of the racer.
Despite the risks, Maria Resa continues to fight against the government in Duterte. In an interview with AFP last year, he said, “Someone has to take a risk, someone has to show courage so that their teammates can take their work forward.”
Maria Resa was involved in news gathering in many countries. He has important work to do on terrorism. He is the one who raised the issue of links between Southeast Asian militants and international terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda. Reports on the theft of reserves in Bangladesh were also published in his established radar.
Resa, a graduate of Princeton University, is a dual citizen of the Philippines and the United States.
