POBNEWS24, Dhaka, May 17, 2022 : Today is the 42nd Homecoming Day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s daughter and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina. On this day in 1971, he returned to the country, ending his life in exile. After the assassination of Bangabandhu and his family in 1975, Sheikh Hasina was in exile for almost six years. The ruling party Awami League has taken various programs on the occasion of the day.
In a message on the occasion of the day, the President said. Abdul Hamid said Sheikh Hasina’s return home is a milestone in the history of democracy in Bangladesh. His historic return to his homeland paved the way for the liberation war consciousness, the values of independence and the establishment of democracy.
On the night of 15 August 1975, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members were killed by misguided army members. Bangabandhu’s two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana were staying abroad that day. The assassins wanted to wipe out Bangabandhu’s legacy. Sheikh Hasina took refuge in India from her husband’s workplace in Germany.
After the assassination of Bangabandhu, the killers took this country back to Pakistani ideology. Oppression and torture came down on the leaders and workers of Awami League. After losing Bangabandhu, many leaders and activists of the party also became disillusioned. The Awami League split. Under such circumstances, Sheikh Hasina was elected President through the National Conference of the Awami League held on 14, 15 and 16 February 1981. Then Sheikh Hasina decided to return to the country. The then government led by Ziaur Rahman created various obstacles in the way of Sheikh Hasina’s return to the country. Even after this, Sheikh Hasina returned to the country on 16 May 1981 by air from Delhi, the capital of India, via Kolkata.
Ignoring the bloody eyes of the military ruler, Dhaka became a city of processions on the day of his return. The procession started coming out from the alleys of the capital throughout the day. Ignoring the rain, Kurmitola International Airport and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar became crowded.
Returning to the country, Sheikh Hasina promised to realize Bangabandhu’s unfinished dream. Receiving a reception in the presence of lakhs of people in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Sheikh Hasina said, “I have come to you after losing everything. He said, “I want to bring smiles on the faces of the miserable people of Bengal by implementing it in the way directed by Bangabandhu with you. I want to snatch the socio-economic and overall liberation of the Bengali nation.” ‘
Returning to the country, Sheikh Hasina started performing her duties as the President of the Awami League through the anti-military movement. After that he led every movement in the country from the front. Under his leadership, the Awami League came to power after a long 21 years by winning the 1996 national elections. So far, Sheikh Hasina has been the Prime Minister four times. Under his leadership, Bangladesh has changed from a least developed country to a developing country. Now it is on the way to becoming a middle income country.
