Ansar and VDP emerged the unbeaten champions of maiden edition of Walton Women Federation Cup Handball Competition 2020 beating Police Handball Club by 31-23 goals in the final match at Shaheed (Captain) M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium on Saturday. Bangladesh Handball Federation (BHF) organised the event to mark the 100th birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Khadija scored the highest six goals for Ansar while Khaleda netted the highest seven goals for Police in the day’s match. Ansar reached the final beating Naogaon District Sports Association (DSA) by 40-17 goals in the first semifinal. In their group matches, the service team beat Faridpur DSA by 37-6 goals, Handball Training Center Dhaka by 46-11 goals and Police Handball club by 28-17 goals.After the final, Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh Mustafa Osman Turan distributed prizes in the closing and prize giving ceremony as the chief guest. Walton Group Executive Director (Games and Sports) FM Iqbal Bin Anwar Dawn and Radio Today head of program development Zahirul Islam Tutul were present there as special guests. BHF vice-president Golam Habib presided over the program.
The champions were awarded with Tk 15,000 while the runners-up team Tk 10,000 and the third-placed team Tk 5,000. Sponsors Walton Group provided jerseys to the participating teams. Rubina of Police team adjudged as the player of the competition. Jamalpur SA clinched the third slot beating Naogaon DSA by 20-18 goals in the place-decider at the same venue on Thursday.
This year, a total of eight teams, split into three groups, will take part in the 8-day meet. Group A comprises Police, Ansar and VDP, Faridpur DSA and Handball Training Center Dhaka while Group B comprises Jamalpur Sports Academy, Naogaon DSA, Jessore DSA and Tetulia Upazila Sports Association.
