POBNEWS24 Dhaka, May 27, 2026 : Eid-ul-Azha is one of the two main festivals of Islam. This religious festival will be celebrated on Thursday. Ignoring intermittent rain, waterlogging on roads and streets, transport crisis, high fares, and the risk of accidents in various parts of the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, millions of homebound Muslims are returning home to spend the Eid holiday with their families like every time.
Some have taken buses with extra fares, some have taken trains, and some have taken open trucks or pickups to reduce travel costs, getting drenched in the rain. Some are still on the road.
Meanwhile, the risk of accidents is also increasing. According to the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samiti, an organization working on road mismanagement and passenger rights, 161 people were killed and 389 injured in 133 road accidents in the country from May 21 to May 26.
Talking to journalists from different districts around Dhaka, it has been learned that many people are returning home by truck in adverse weather conditions, taking risks to save money.
Many people have already reached home, but many are still in Dhaka. Despite getting leave, they could not leave due to rain and hardship. Many of them will go home today.
According to the Arabic calendar, every year on the 10th of the month of Zilhaj, the day of sacrifice, and the next two days, devout Muslims sacrifice various animals.
Accordingly, this year Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated in Bangladesh tomorrow, Thursday, May 28.
But light to moderate or sometimes heavy rainfall has been occurring in various parts of Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka, for the past few days. Especially since May 24.
And, immediately after this, the government holiday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha has also started. Therefore, many people are rushing home to spend the Eid holiday with their families.
In view of Eid-ul-Adha or Eid-ul-Qurbani, animal markets have been set up in various parts of the country, including Dhaka. So, naturally, this sudden rain has also increased the suffering of animal buyers.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a weather forecast for the next five days at 9 am today, Tuesday, May 27. It has been said that there is a possibility of temporary gusty winds and light to moderate thundershowers in different parts of the country on the morning of Eid.
For example, this situation may occur in many places in Dhaka, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions. Along with this, the Meteorological Office is not ruling out the possibility of moderate to heavy rain in some places across the country.
However, there is a possibility of temporary gusty winds and light to moderate thundershowers in many places in Dhaka, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna and Sylhet divisions in the next 24 hours from 9 am on Eid. This may also happen in some places in Barisal and Chittagong.
On the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, the government has declared a general holiday for seven consecutive days from May 25th to May 31st for all except for several government and private sectors.
For example, electricity, water, gas, private industries and factories, doctors and workers engaged in medical services, which are considered essential services, did not get this holiday.
But many of those who got it left Dhaka on the night of May 24th or the next day amid adverse weather conditions. Again, many private office workers, including garment workers, got a holiday one or two days before Eid and they either left yesterday or will leave today.
Among the places where the most traffic jams are seen in and around Dhaka during the Eid-ul-Adha period are Gazipur, Munshiganj, Narayanganj, Kamalapur Railway Station and Sadarghat.
Apart from this, there is Savar, a garment-dominated area located near Dhaka.
From the local administration of these areas to local journalists and passengers, it has been learned that there is comparatively less crowd on the roads, waterways, and railways today.
They say that this time, due to the long holiday for Qurbani, people have left Dhaka in stages rather than going all at once. That is why the pressure of passengers on the roads is much less.
There are currently about 3,500 export-oriented garment factories in Bangladesh, and a large part of them are located in Savar. Millions of workers work in these factories.
Speaking to local journalists and industrial police in Savar, it has been learned that most of the factories in that area closed the day before yesterday, i.e. on May 25th. The remaining garment factories also closed yesterday. Therefore, the garment workers have already returned home.
Speaking to local journalists, it has been learned that since the factories were closed, there was severe traffic jam from Nabinagar in Savar to Sreepur via Byepail since yesterday evening.
But since this morning, there has been no overcrowding on various roads and highways in that area. However, there are still traffic jams or crowds in some places.
A similar picture is also in Gazipur. Arif Khan Abir, a local journalist from this district near Dhaka, said that traffic on the Dhaka-Tangail highway is somewhat slow due to waterlogging caused by rain. But there is no crowd of people anywhere now.
13 kilometers of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway is now completely quiet. Meanwhile, there was a traffic jam of about one kilometer at the Padma Bridge toll plaza yesterday, compared to two kilometers the day before. But there is no such issue today, he said.
Meanwhile, the weather forecast has given warning number one for some inland river ports of the country from 1:15 pm to 6 pm on Wednesday.
It said that rain or thunderstorms accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds of 45-60 kilometers per hour from the west or northwest direction are likely over Barisal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Comilla, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar regions.
