POBNEWS24, Dhaka Aug 28, 2022 : Two mortar shells fired from Myanmar have landed in the Ghumdhum area of Bandarban, near the zero point of the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

On Sunday (August 28) at around 3 pm, the mortar shells landed near the Tumbru North Mosque in Ghumdhum Union of Naikshyongchari. Although there were no casualties, there is panic among the locals.

Mohammad Anis, a local resident, said that in the afternoon, the shell came near Ayaz’s house in Uttarpara with a loud sound. Another shot was later fired into a nearby street. We are in panic, we don’t know what happens when.

Jahangir Aziz, chairman of Ghumdhum Union Parishad, said that there has been shelling on the other side (Myanmar) for the past two weeks.

I have learned from various sources that there is a conflict between the Myanmar Army and the Arakan Army in Rakhine. Even though the shells have been fired at the mountains for a long time, the mortar shells have fallen in Uttarpara today. The locals are scared, he said.

Borhan Aziz, a resident of Ward No. 3 of Tumbru area of Ghumdham Union, said that this bomb fell a little away from my house. It is a word after reading. At first I think it’s iron, then I see it looks like a bomb. Immediately I recorded a video and uploaded it to my Facebook, it went viral. But I don’t know who threw it. He said that BGB members have taken position at the spot.

To learn about this, Cox’s Bazar 34 BGB captain Lt. Colonel Md. Mehdi Hossain Kabir’s mobile phone was tried repeatedly but he did not receive the call.

However, a BGB source said that strict surveillance is being done at the border. BGB members are on alert to control any situation.

Abul Kalam (35), a resident of Ghumdhum Uttarpara, came to the nearby Kutupalong market in Ukhiya to market on Sunday afternoon. He is worried about his family after receiving the news of mortar shells falling in his area on his mobile phone.

He said that the brother informed on the phone that the bomb had fallen. I told him to come here with his family, thinking to stay here (Kutupalong) at a relative’s house.

Meanwhile, due to the tension in Rakhine, 4,200 Rohingyas of 621 families living on the zero line of South Konapara border in Ghumdhum are also terrified.

Rohingya Abul Hakim (53), who lives in the Zero Line shelter camp, said, suddenly there is a fierce conflict in Rakhine, we are in fear. Myanmar’s BGP is monitoring us by setting up checkpoints, I don’t know if I will be able to go back to my country at all.

Dhumdhum area is a very remote hilly area under Nakshanchhari police station of Bandarban district. OC of that police station Tantu Saha told UNI that the first mortar shell fell in the morning and the second one fell around 3 pm. He confirmed that the incident was true. However, until this report was written, BGB’s Cox’s Bazar Sector Commander and Operations Director were repeatedly called on their mobile phones, but no response was received.
