POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Sep 2, 2022 : Farmers will be given all the necessary support including seeds and fertilizers for the expansion of summer tomato cultivation, said Agriculture Secretary Md. Saidul Islam. He said, to ensure fair price of tomatoes, import from India will be stopped during the season. A decision will be taken after discussing this with the Ministry of Commerce.
The secretary said these things while addressing the chief guest at the field day program on summer tomato at Batra village in Satkhira’s Kalawar on Friday.
Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (Bari) organized the event.
Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority Executive Director (Additional Secretary) Sabiha Parveen was present as the guest of honor on the field day. Under the chairmanship of Bari Director General Debashish Sarkar, Bari Director Apurba Kanti Chowdhury, Additional Director of Khulna Region of Agriculture Extension Department Fazlul Haque, Satkhira Deputy Director Jamal Uddin, Kalaroa Upazila Executive Officer Runi Biswas and others spoke.
Summer tomato growers attended the field day. At this time, farmers reported many problems including problems in marketing, not getting fair prices, and not having cold storage.
In this regard, the Agriculture Secretary said, initiatives will be taken to set up a marketing center in Batra village. Apart from this, arrangements will soon be made for the construction of multi-chamber cold storage, where vegetables, potatoes etc. can be stored along with tomatoes. Apart from this, the Agriculture Secretary also directed the field level officials to continue strict monitoring to prevent fertilizer manipulation.
Meanwhile, cultivation of summer hybrid tomatoes developed by Bari in Satkhira is increasing day by day. Last year, tomato was cultivated in 70 hectares of land in the district, this year it has been cultivated in 95 hectares of land.
