POBNEWS24, Dhaka July 17, 2023 : A water bus that sank in the Buriganga river after being hit by a bulkhead loaded with sand has been recovered. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) rescue ship ‘Rustom’ brought the water bus to Postgola Bridge on Monday afternoon.
Earlier on Monday (July 17) a new rescue operation started with the help of the rescue ship Rustam from 6 am. However, no one was recovered alive or dead in today’s operation. In this situation, the fire service, coast guard and BIWTA personnel are continuing the rescue operation.
In this regard, SI Hasan Maruf of Sadarghat Naval Station said that with the help of the rescue ship Rustom, the sunken water bus was pulled to the shore. However, no one could be rescued after Sunday night. Rescue work is still going on.
Earlier, after the water bus drowning on Sunday night, the rescue operation went on for about six hours. Later at 2.40 pm the rescue operation was temporarily stopped. 6 alive and 3 dead were rescued in the rescue operation which lasted for about 6 hours.
This water bus with passengers sank after being hit by a sand-laden bulkhead in the Buriganga river section of Keraniganj’s Telerghat from Shyambazar in the capital on Sunday around 8:30 pm. At that time, many could swim to the shore but many disappeared. Later rescuers recovered the bodies of three passengers of the submerged water bus. Besides, 6 people who were rescued alive were treated at Mitford Hospital in the capital.
