POBNEWS24, Dhaka May 2, 2025 : The interim government is reducing the arrears of Adani’s electricity bills left over from the ousted Sheikh Hasina government. Adani is currently being paid the arrears in addition to the monthly bill. This information was reported by Reuters on Friday (May 2) quoting Dilip Jha, Chief Financial Officer of Adani Power.
He said that Bangladesh has significantly reduced its arrears. However, $900 million is still outstanding. Which they are hopeful of receiving.
Reuters reported that Bangladesh signed an agreement with Adani Power in 2017. However, Dhaka was struggling to pay as per the agreement. When the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out in 2022, the arrears continued to increase due to the increase in fuel prices and the movement to overthrow former autocratic Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year.
As a result, Adani Power reduced its electricity supply to Bangladesh by half last year. However, since Bangladesh is paying monthly bills again; Dilip Jha said that power is being supplied in full now, as the dues are also being paid. He said in a ‘post-earnings meeting’ with analysts on Thursday, we are supplying power in full to Bangladesh. The money we are receiving from Bangladesh is more than the monthly bill. We are hopeful that not only the amount equal to the monthly bill, but also the previous dues will be paid.
Adani Power said that their bill to Bangladesh is 2 billion dollars. Of which about 1.2 billion dollars has been paid.
