POBNEWS24, Dhaka Aug 28, 2022 : Bangladesh will import 500 MW electricity from Nepal. Initially 50 MW electricity will be brought. It is known that Bangladesh will finalize the agreement to purchase 500 MW of electricity from the 900 MW Upper Karnali hydro power plant built by India’s GMR Group in Nepal by September.
Bangladesh and Nepal will jointly request India for cooperation in importing 50 MW electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh through Kushtia Bhermara through India.
This decision was taken in the fourth meeting of Bangladesh-Nepal Joint Working Group (JWG) and Joint Steering Committee (JSC) last Thursday.
A delegation of 7 members headed by Power Secretary Habibur Rahman went to Nepal to participate in the meeting on behalf of Bangladesh. Sushil Chandra Tewari, Secretary of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation was on behalf of Nepal in the meeting.
According to a statement published by the Ministry of Energy of Nepal, Bangladesh told Nepal in this meeting that Bangladesh will finalize the agreement to purchase 500 MW of electricity from the 900 MW Upper Karnali hydropower plant built by India’s GMR Group in Nepal by September.
The meeting also decided to hand over the environmental impact report of the 683 MW Sankoshi-3 hydropower project to Bangladesh.
India-Bangladesh inaugurated Bheramara-Bahrampur cross-border power transmission line in 2013.
Currently, Bangladesh imports 1000 MW of electricity through this line.
Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with GMR in 2019, the signed PPA was submitted to the Cabinet.
Both sides have agreed to try for a tripartite agreement between the three countries for uninterrupted power transmission between Nepal and Bangladesh.
