The Awami League has clarified whether the new election commission will be through a law or through a search committee as before. Today, Monday afternoon, the President said Bangabhaban. An Awami League delegation led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took part in the dialogue with Abdul Hamid. Later, the party’s general secretary Obaidul Quader held a press conference at the party’s central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
Obaidul Quader said the need to enact a law to constitute the EC in accordance with Article 117 of the Constitution has been raised with the President. In this regard, the government has taken a policy decision to raise a draft law in this regard.
At the press conference, the general secretary of the Awami League said that the Awami League would support the steps taken by the President to form the EC with constitutional powers and wisdom. Obaidul Quader said that the Election Commission was formed through search committee twice before. It involved political parties and civil society. They have also raised the issue with the President.
At that time, the journalists asked Obaidul Quader, will the election commission be formed through law or through search committee? In reply, Obaidul Quader said, ‘There is no magic card in passing the law. The process by which the law is made will be the same. Asked if it is possible to enact a law in a short time, Obaidul Quader said, “Nothing is impossible, wait.”
Earlier, a 10-member delegation led by Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived at Bangabhaban around 4 pm on Monday. Abdul Hamid welcomed them. After an hour-long dialogue, the Awami League delegation left Bangabhaban at 5 pm.
