POBNEWS24,Dhaka, Jan 18 , 2022: The western part of Afghanistan was shaken by an earthquake on Monday. The magnitude of the tremor was 5.3 on the Richter scale. The quake killed at least 26 people. Various infrastructures in the region are facing damage. The news agency AFP quoted a government official as saying.
Baz Mohammad Sarwari, a spokesman for the western Afghan province of Badghis, told AFP that the quake had caused casualties when the roof of a building collapsed in the province’s Qadis district. The dead included five women and four children. Four people were injured. The damage has also been done in Mukbar district of the province. However, the number of casualties and the number of casualties were not immediately known.
Afghans have been living in crisis since the Taliban took control of Kabul last August. Western aid has been cut off because of the Taliban’s “notoriety.” The country’s assets abroad have also been seized. It has caused a humanitarian catastrophe across Afghanistan. There is a food crisis due to severe drought. Quadis district is one of the worst affected areas by drought.
Al Jazeera reports that Mollah Janano, an official at the Afghan Ministry of Emergency Situations, confirmed the death toll from the quake. He also said that more than 700 houses were destroyed in the quake.
Afghanistan is prone to frequent earthquakes. Earthquakes are especially prevalent in the Hindu Kush mountains. This region is located near the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. Earlier in 2015, a strong earthquake hit Afghanistan. A magnitude 7.5 earthquake shook the region and killed at least 260 people.
