POBNEWS24, Dhaka Fab 4, 2026 : The parliamentary election for Sherpur-3 (Shribardi-Jhenaigati) constituency has been postponed as per the Representation of the People Order (RPO) following the death of Jamaat-e-Islami’s legitimate candidate Nuruzzaman Badal. Senior Secretary of the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat Akhtar Ahmed informed this on Wednesday (February 4).

Sub-section 1 of Section 17 of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), 1972 states that if a validly nominated candidate dies after the expiry of the period for withdrawal of nomination papers and before the poll, the election proceedings for the concerned constituency shall be immediately cancelled or postponed.

According to the law, in this case, the candidate must be recognized as a ‘valid candidate’ by the Election Commission.

After the news of the candidate’s death is confirmed, the concerned Returning Officer will announce the cancellation of the election activities for that constituency through a public notice, and the commission will announce a new schedule at a later date.
