POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Feb 7, 2026 : The Teesta Barrage Master Plan will be implemented as soon as possible if BNP comes to power, party chairman Tareque Rahman has said.
Referring to the Teesta Master Plan, he said that if BNP gets the opportunity to form the government, it will ensure balanced distribution of water. We will protect the people of the Teesta basin from the risk of desertification.
Tareque Rahman said this while speaking as the chief guest at an election rally at Birampur Government College Ground in Dinajpur on Saturday afternoon.
The BNP chairman said that the people of the country have been deprived of real voting rights for 17 years. People will get the opportunity to exercise their voting rights in the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections. BNP’s commitment is to ensure the security and free movement of citizens in a democratic state.
Mentioning his grandmother’s house in Dinajpur and his spiritual ties with the people of this area, Tarique Rahman said, “I want votes from the people of Nanibari. The people of this area consider me their own. I hope they will vote for me and make me a winner.”
Highlighting the potential of Dinajpur’s agricultural resources, he said, the soil here is very fertile and the people are hardworking. Just as the aroma and taste of Katari Bhog rice is incomparable, the litchi here is one of the best fruits in the country. If these products are produced and processed with proper planning, modern technology and maintaining international standards, it is possible to earn huge foreign exchange by exporting these products to the world market.
Expressing his determination to introduce Dinajpur’s traditional agricultural products to the world market, he further said, Dinajpur is not only the country’s food bank, but also has the full potential to be one of the representatives of Bangladesh’s agricultural power in the international market.
The BNP Chairman said, BNP’s politics is not limited to the production of raw agricultural products only. Fair prices for farmers will be ensured by establishing agricultural product-based industrial enterprises. This will increase the financial well-being of farmers. At the same time, new employment opportunities will be created for the unemployed youth. The main goal of BNP is to improve the quality of life of farmers and working people.
Criticizing the previous fascist Sheikh Hasina government, he said that agriculture and farmers have been neglected in the last few years. Production costs have increased, but farmers have not received fair price for their products. Farmers have been deprived by forgetting the reality that ‘if farmers survive, the country will survive’.
He assured that if BNP comes to power, it will give top priority to agriculture and ensure the rights of farmers.
Tarique Rahman said that modern agricultural processing centers, storage facilities and export-oriented industrial factories will be established in the Dinajpur region. As a result, wastage of agricultural products will be reduced, and it will be easier to export products according to international standards. At the same time, he also promised to implement long-term plans to protect agriculture and the environment.
Finally, he called on everyone to unite and build a democratic, agriculture-friendly and development-oriented Bangladesh and handed over the paddy sheaf symbol to the BNP candidates of the six parliamentary constituencies of Dinajpur district.
It is worth noting that the public meeting was held in a festive and lively atmosphere with the presence of thousands of leaders, activists and ordinary people under the chairmanship of District BNP President Advocate Mofazzal Hossain Dulal and the moderation of General Secretary Bakhtiar Ahmed Kochi.
It is worth noting that the national parliamentary elections and the general elections will be held in Bangladesh on February 12. The next government of Bangladesh will be determined in the 13th national parliamentary elections. The elections will be held under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, which has been running the country since August 2024.
A total of 1,981 candidates are in the fray for 298 seats.
Out of the 59 political parties registered with the Election Commission, 51 parties are getting votes in the 13th parliamentary elections.
At the end of the withdrawal period, a total of 1,981 candidates are contesting in 298 seats. Of them, 1,732 will contest under the party symbol, and 249 are independents.
This time, the highest number of 288 candidates are in the field of voting with the BNP’s paddy sheaf symbol. Next is the Islami Andolan Bangladesh, with 253 candidates from the party.
Independent candidates are the third highest in number. And a total of 224 will contest under the Jamaat-e-Islami’s scale symbol.
In addition, 192 candidates from the Jatiya Party, 90 from the Gana Adhibar Parishad and 32 from the NCP are in the vote.
The parties that are not in the vote in the registered parties are:
Bangladesh Socialist Party (ML), Krishak Sramik Janata League, Bangladesh National Awami Party, Bangladesh Workers Party, Bikalpadhara Bangladesh, Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, Trinamool BNP and Bangladesh Nationalist Movement-BNM.
Among the 60 registered parties, Awami League is not on the ballot as its registration is suspended.
1.35 crore voters will cast their votes in the referendum alongside parliament on February 12.
