POBNEWS24, Dhaka June 24, 2026 : Various incidents of pushing people along the India-Bangladesh border by labeling them as ‘alleged Bangladeshis’ have come to light so far in May-June 2026. The relevant authorities, BGB and international news agencies have said in recent reports that all the people allegedly pushed by the BSF have been taken back by the BSF except at the Murshidabad border, which was identified by Bangladesh. But West Bengal Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari has claimed that his accurate information has not been verified by any statistics and investigations.
His claim that more than 10,000 Bangladeshis have been identified in India and sent back to Bangladesh. But analyzing the border situation, BGB reports, the international news agency Reuters, and the information published by the Indian media, it is seen that there is no public government information or documents to support this claim so far.
Rather, in most of the incidents that have come to light during May-June 2026, the BGB has thwarted the alleged ‘push-in’ or ‘pushback’ attempts of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF).
According to information from the BGB and various media outlets, allegations of push-in were raised in the following border areas during May-June 2026. The analytical information of the areas is presented in this report.
Jhenaidah Border: According to a Reuters report, the BSF tried to smuggle 30-35 people into Bangladesh in a prison van at the Jhenaidah border. They could not enter when the BGB stopped them.
Bangabari Border in Chapainawabganj: On June 4, the BSF tried to smuggle 28 people into Bangladesh. The BGB stopped them. Later, they were trapped at the zero line.
Lalmonirhat Border: An attempt was made to smuggle 33 people through three separate points. The BGB prevented them.
Panchagarh border: BGB foils multiple push-in attempts. Dozens of women and children remain at the zero line.
Naogaon border: BGB foils push-in attempts in a coordinated operation in the northern region.
Meherpur’s Tentulbaria border: BGB stops seven people from entering Bangladesh.
Chuadanga’s Darshana-Gede border: BSF tries to push 11 people into Bangladesh. BGB finally takes them back in the face of BGB’s position.
Satkhira-Sundarbans coastal river route: BGB says 15-20 people tried to enter using the land border as well as the river route. BGB patrols failed in that attempt. The question is, has Bangladesh accepted them?
In most cases, the answer is no. Bangladesh did not accept them. BSF was forced to take them back from the zero line.
BGB has publicly said that no one will be accepted until a person is verified as a Bangladeshi citizen. Bangladesh’s position is that repatriation should be done in accordance with the existing diplomatic and border protocols of the two countries.
In the first week of June, the BGB said it had repelled 10 push-in attempts in 24 hours. In these cases, no one was allowed to enter Bangladesh.
When 11 people were pushed back at the Darshana border in Chuadanga, the BSF took them back to Indian territory in the face of BGB’s resistance.
Although many people were also trapped at the zero line at the Chapainawabganj and Lalmonirhat borders, the BGB did not allow them to enter Bangladesh.
In one incident that has been publicly documented, before sending 17 people back through the Murshidabad border, the Indian authorities identified them as Bangladeshi citizens and informed about coordination with the Bangladeshi authorities. This was a formal verification and coordination-based repatriation, which is not a “push-in”. That is, in most of the incidents that have been controversial, Bangladesh did not accept it, but rather the BGB prevented it.
The question is how credible is Shuvendu Adhikari’s claim of 10,000?
So far, the BSF has not released any public figures showing the repatriation of 10,000 Bangladeshis. The Indian Home Ministry has also not released any such verified figures. This number is not consistent with the incidents recorded by the BGB. International news agencies Reuters, Al Jazeera and Indian media have also not been able to present independent evidence for the claim of 10,000. As a result, the figure of 10,000 is currently being considered a political claim and not a verified official figure.
The most important reality at the border from May 2026 to June 2026 is that the BGB has repelled several alleged push-in attempts by the BSF. Such incidents have been recorded at the Jhenaidah, Chapainawabganj, Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh, Naogaon, Meherpur, Chuadanga and Satkhira borders. In most cases, Bangladesh has not accepted these individuals but rather they have been detained at the zero line or the BSF has taken them back. As a result, the claim of repatriating 10,000 Bangladeshis is not currently consistent with the field-level information and public official documents. A responsible officer of the BGB told Ganashakti, “Not a single person was able to enter Bangladesh illegally in 2026. The BGB is very active in protecting the border.” The border worth mentioning is the ‘Sadipur border’. There were several attempts to push back or enter through that area by the BSF, but they were not successful due to the resistance of the BGB. On Wednesday afternoon, when this reporter spoke to the Benapole correspondent of the daily Sangbad newspaper, Debal Kumar Das, he said that there were no incidents of push-back or attempts to enter Bangladesh at this border and the BGB patrols are very strong.
