POBNEWS24, Dhaka Feb 22, 2026 : A new government was formed in Bangladesh on February 17 through a free and fair election on February 12. Tareque Rahman became the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh as the BNP was the majority party.
After the formation of the new government in Bangladesh, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma paid a courtesy call and held initial exchanges of views with the new Foreign Minister and State Minister on Sunday. This was his first meeting.
India has been maintaining high-level contacts with Bangladesh since the elections. This will strengthen India-Bangladesh relations more than ever.
Immediately after the elections, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a congratulatory message to Tareque Rahman on February 13. They also spoke on the phone later that day.
Later on February 17, when the new government was sworn in, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha of India came to Dhaka to attend the swearing-in ceremony. He also held a bilateral meeting with the new Prime Minister. During the meeting, the Indian Speaker handed over a congratulatory message from Prime Minister Modi to Prime Minister Tareque Rahman.
India expressed its desire to strengthen multifaceted bilateral relations with Bangladesh in a meeting with the Foreign Minister on Sunday. Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma conveyed these words during the meeting.
