Journalist’s death : Joy’s concern about freedom of expression in Bangladesh

POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Aug 28, 2024 : The body of private television channel G-TV journalist Rahanuma Sarah (32) was recovered from the Hatirjheel lake in the capital Dhaka.

When Rahnuma was rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday night, the doctor on duty declared her dead.

Rahanuma Sarah worked as Newsroom Editor of G-TV. She lived in Kalyanpur in Dhaka city. Sarah is Noakhali district is the daughter of Bakhtiar Shikdar of Krishnapur village of Islambagh Sonaimuri upazila.

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy has given a post on his verified Facebook page about the death of journalist Rahanuma Sarah.

He gave this status at 10:20 AM Bangladesh time today.

Where Joy wrote, ‘Rahmuna Sara Gazi TV newsroom editor found dead. Her body was recovered from Hatirjheel lake in Dhaka city. Another brutal attack on freedom of expression in Bangladesh. The recent arrest of Golam Dastgir Gazi, a secular news channel, Gazi TV.

However, many are claiming this post of Joy as provocative. Many are commenting on this as rumors and misinformation.

One named Shafiul Islam wrote, ‘I am working in GTV. There is no political issue in our office. Please stop lying about our newsroom editor Sarah’s death. Seeing Sarah’s Facebook post, it can be suicide! How were you sure she was killed before the police investigated?’

It is to be noted that Sarah Rahnuma made a post on her Facebook wall around 12 pm on Tuesday. Where she writes – ‘It is better to die than to be alive.’

At the same time, she made another post tagging a young man named Faheem Faisal. Where he writes, ‘It’s nice to have a friend like you. God bless you. Hope all your dreams come true soon. We had many plans. Sorry, can’t fulfill the plans. May God bless you in every aspect of your life.

In that post, Sarah also posted a few pictures of Dhaka University’s Raju sculpture with a flag tied on her forehead.

It is known that journalist Sarah is married. Her husband Syed Shubhra. Regarding the death of his wife, he said, “We got married without informing the family seven years ago through a relationship. Yesterday, Sarah went to the office and did not return home at night and sent the house rent money to a person around 10:30 pm.

He also said, ‘Later I called him and said that you come home at night, then why did you send the money to someone else? Then he hung up the phone saying ‘I am busy’. Later around 3 pm I got news that he had jumped into the water of Hatirjheel lake. Later DM came and found him dead.

Regarding the husband-wife relationship, he said, ‘There was no quarrel between us. But since some time ago my wife wants to separate. Both of us will go to Kazi office and get divorce. In this situation of the country, the Kazi office was no longer visited.

Pedestrian Sagar, who rescued Rahanuma and took her to the hospital, said that he saw the woman drowning in the water of the lake. After that, she was quickly rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical, the doctor in charge conducted an examination and said that the woman was no longer alive.
