POBNEWS24, Dhaka June 30, 2026 : Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) Socialist Party President and former Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in a case of crimes against humanity in the July mass uprising. The International Crimes Tribunal-2 gave the verdict on Tuesday.
He was tried on eight charges of crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising in 2024. One of the charges is ordering the killing of six people in Kushtia during the July mass uprising and inciting attacks on protesters. On the other hand,
Former Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu reacted to the verdict by calling it a ‘farce trial’ after being sentenced in the case of crimes against humanity. On the other hand, his wife rejected the verdict and announced further legal action.
After the verdict was announced at the International Crimes Tribunal on Tuesday, Inu told reporters as he was being taken from the court premises to the guardhouse, “I was sentenced to a farce trial, I was freed from irony.”
At that time, some other defendants in the prison van chanted slogans of “Joy Bangla.”
On the other hand, Inu’s wife, who was present at the court premises, told reporters, “We reject and hate this verdict against Inu. We are aggrieved. We will talk to the lawyer, family and party and take the next decision.” Earlier, the International Crimes Tribunal convicted Hasanul Haque Inu in a case filed against him for crimes against humanity and sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
Meanwhile, the acting president of the Workers’ Party of Bangladesh, Comrade Mahmudul Hasan Manik, and the acting general secretary, Comrade Nur Ahmed Bakul, issued a statement expressing their strong condemnation and anger over the verdict of ten years of rigorous imprisonment in the ICT on Tuesday in the name of trial in a false case by staging a farce on the president of the National Socialist Party, the organizer of the Liberation War, the leader of the nationalist struggle of the Bengali nation, the pioneer of the fight against tyranny and communalism, Hasanul Haque Inu. The leaders said that the Yunus Gang, along with the Jamaat Shibir circle, which is opposed to the US imperialism and the allied liberation war, has meticulously designed Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, and has systematically tried to sabotage the spirit of the Liberation War. In his process, he has tried to eliminate the leaders of the liberation war, the architects of independence, and the progressive movement forever in various legal cases, including false murder cases. Yunus and Jamaat had arranged the ICT for their own interests for that purpose. The later elected BNP-Jamaat alliance is busy implementing that anti-liberation war goal with the help of US imperialism, Pakistan, and Turkey.
The way the verdict was announced despite the fact that there was no evidence of his involvement in the murder of public leader Hasanul Haque Inu in the entire trial process, the world will see it as a disgrace to the judicial system. ICT will be considered a kangaroo court by domestic and foreign people.
He called for the immediate withdrawal of this fabricated verdict and the release of the heroic freedom fighter Hasanul Haque Inu, along with the unconditional release of all political prisoners, intellectuals, and journalists who are arrested in false cases, including public leader Rashed Khan Menon.
The leaders warned the government that if Jamaat follows the path of right-wing religious fascist forces in the game of exhausting the forces of the liberation war, it will fall into the abyss of history.
Hasanul Haque Inu has been discussed at various times in Bangladeshi politics. Born in 1946, Hasanul Haque Inu completed his studies from BUET in 1970. He played an important role by actively participating in the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
He was the founding vice-president when the JSD was formed in 1972. He has been serving as the party’s general secretary in 1986 and as the party’s president since 2002.
In the 9th National Assembly election in Bangladesh in December 2008, he was elected as a member of parliament from the Kushtia-2 constituency on the Awami League-led grand alliance.
During the tenure of that government, he was given the responsibility of the Information Ministry in 2012. Later, when the 14-party alliance led by the Awami League was formed, he was also an important leader there.
The 10th National Assembly election of Bangladesh was held on January 5, 2014, without the participation of BNP. In that election too, he was elected as a member of parliament from Kushtia as a candidate of the Awami League alliance.
When the Awami League formed the government for the second consecutive term that year, Hasanul Haque Inu was again given the responsibility of the Ministry of Information. He served as the Minister of Information during this term until 2019.
However, although he was elected as a member of parliament in the controversial 2018 National Parliament election, he was not given the responsibility of a minister again.
Finally, on January 7, 2024, he contested from the Kushtia-2 constituency as a candidate of the 14-party alliance in the 12th National Parliament election and lost to the rebel candidate of the Awami League.
