POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Feb 14,2022: The driver of the pickup van whose vehicle killed five brothers in a road accident at Chakaria in Cox’s Bazar district was not known to the victims earlier.
It was a mere accident, which happened due to dense fog and reckless driving speed.
Amid claim by the victims’ relatives that the incident might have been pre-planned, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said this after a preliminary interrogation of the arrested driver.
The RAB said that the incident was not pre-planned. The pickup driver Saiful did not have any driving license. Yet for two years he drove a variety of vehicles, including pickups, moon cars and three-ton trucks. This information was given by Commander Khandaker Al Moin, Director of Law and Media Wing of RAB, at a press conference held at RAB Media Centre at Karwan Bazar in the capital at noon yesterday.
Commander Moin said that one week before the accident at Chakaria, driver Sahidul Islam Saiful started operating the pickup on a daily wage of Tk 500. Due to fog and reckless driving speed, he lost control in Chakraya on February 8 and crushed several members of the same family.
The victims were returning their home after holding funeral programme of his father. Five siblings died in that incident.
After the incident, Saiful went into hiding under the direction of the owner.
Meanwhile, a section of people tried to divert the incident in different way, but they later succumbed to the role of RAB, an elite force in Bangladesh.
It may be mentioned that 5 brothers–Anupam Sushil (46), Nirupam Sushil (40), Deepak Sushil (35), Champak Sushil, 30, Swaran Sushil (24)–were killed by a pickup on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway when they were returning their home after paying their last respects to their father at Changaria Dulahazara Union’s Malanghat Hasina Para.
