POBNEWS24, Dhaka, April 25, 2022 : Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), has sought the cooperation of the United States in fulfilling its responsibilities including tackling terrorism, extremism and human trafficking.

The RAB Director General sought the cooperation during a discussion on Bangladesh-US relations at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) auditorium in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon. Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen was the chief guest on the occasion. The special guest was US Ambassador Peter D. Hass

In an open discussion, the RAB Director General said, ‘RAB has procured significant equipment from the United States. We have received training and management support, especially since we procured helicopters from the United States. Those helicopters are used in RAB operations and humanitarian aid. I have received training from experts. ‘

“As a result of US training, we have been able to successfully combat terrorism, religious extremism, human trafficking and illegal weapons,” he said. We mainly deal with terrorism and drugs. These are also priorities for the United States. ‘

Director General Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun said, “We want to take our relations to new heights for the protection of human rights and the smooth running of the activities of this elite force in the future.” It is necessary for a safe and secure society. ‘

The RAB Director General said, “We want to be associated with the US Embassy in Dhaka and stay connected. We need this involvement. They were involved with us before. We want to be involved with the United States again. ‘

Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun said that the cooperation between RAB and the US judiciary is also significant. An internal investigation cell has been set up at the RAB headquarters under the International Criminal Investigation Training Cooperation Program (ECTAP). He said that in order to ensure the accountability of RAB members, US ECTAP officials had provided training on investigation and human rights at the initiative of the US Embassy in Bangladesh.

The United States wants RAB

Speaking as a special guest at the end of the event, US Ambassador Peter de Haas said, “I want to say honestly, there is no chance of lifting the ban on the Rapid Action Battalion without specific action and accountability. We want a RAB who will be as tough on counter-terrorism as they are on maintaining respect for basic human rights. ‘

“The imposition of sanctions on the RAB does not mean that we will not be able to increase our already strong security cooperation in enforcing the law,” the ambassador said. We will continue to work with Bangladesh to curb international crime and terrorism, increase border security and prevent violent extremism. ‘

Ambassador Haas said the United States continues to provide support to counterterrorism and international crime police, counterterrorism units, and specialized units in the Chittagong, Sylhet, and Rajshahi metropolitan police.
