The Ministry will try its best to stop tobacco cultivation: Environment Minister

POBNEWS24, Dhaka Jan 15, 2023 : Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister. Shahab Uddin said that the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change will try its best to stop tobacco cultivation considering the serious damage to public health and environment. In this case, we will work together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Health. 

The Minister of Environment said these things in the chief guest’s speech at the discussion meeting on creating a tobacco-free Bangladesh by 2040 and on the harmful effects of tobacco on the environment and climate change announced by the Honorable Prime Minister, organized at the Dhaka Ahchania Mission Auditorium in Dhanmondi on Sunday.

The Minister of Environment said these things in the chief guest’s speech at the discussion meeting on creating a tobacco-free Bangladesh by 2040 and on the harmful effects of tobacco on the environment and climate change announced by the Honorable Prime Minister, organized at the Dhaka Ahchania Mission Auditorium in Dhanmondi on Sunday.

Mentioning the need to give incentives to tobacco farmers for cultivating alternative agricultural products to tobacco, the minister said that everyone should work together to stop tobacco farming as a threat to the environment, climate change, public health and economy. Non-governmental organizations should continue their support and cooperation in the government’s tobacco control work.

The Environment Minister said, realizing the dangers of tobacco, the Honorable Prime Minister announced to eradicate tobacco use from Bangladesh by 2040. In order to implement this visionary announcement of the Honorable Prime Minister, his Ministry will provide maximum cooperation in passing further amendments to the Tobacco Control Act at the initiative of the Ministry of Health.

The minister said that it will be ensured that the traders of tobacco products cannot cut trees illegally. To save from the dangers of smoking, everyone should be aware to keep public places and transports completely smoke-free. All must work together and more proactively to make the country smoke-free and protect future generations of the country through tobacco control.  

The chairman of Palli Karma Sahajik Foundation spoke among others in the meeting held under the chairmanship of Dhaka Ahsania Mission President Kazi Rafiqul Alam. Kazi Khalikuzzaman Ahmad, Additional Secretary of Health Services Department (Global Health) Kazi Zebunnesha Begum and Lead Policy Advisor of Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids Md. Mostafizur Rahman and others. 

The keynote speech was presented by Iqbal Masud, Director of Health and Wash Sector of Dhaka Ahsania Mission. In the discussion meeting, the representatives of various organizations gave a strong speech to stop the use of tobacco.
