POBNEWS24, Dhaka, April 25, 2022 : Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over 32,904 houses to landless and homeless families on Tuesday (April 26th) as part of the government’s goal of ensuring housing for the landless and homeless. Senior Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said. Tofazzal Hossain Mia told reporters at a press briefing at PMO.
“The government will hand over 32,904 houses to landless and homeless families,” he said. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the house handover ceremony on Tuesday from her official residence Ganobhaban in a virtual ceremony.
He further said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be associated with Poradia Shelter Project of Nagarkanda Upazila of Faridpur District, Khejurtala Shelter Project of Barguna Sadar Upazila of Barguna District, Khokshabari Shelter Project of Sirajganj Sadar Upazila of Sirajganj District and Hajigaon Shelter Project of Anwara Upazila of Chittagong District.
Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim, Director General (Administration) of the Prime Minister’s Office Mohammad Ahsan Kibria Siddiqui and Project Director of Asrayan Project Abu Saleh Mohammad Ferdous Khan were present at the press conference.
Tofazzal Hossain Mia said another 75,084 single houses are being constructed in the third phase of Asrayan-2 project.
In the third phase of Shelter II, the government has increased costs and redesigned to make homes more durable and climate-tolerant. Now the landless and homeless will get better quality housing with 2.2% land.
He said the cost per house has been increased from Tk 1 lakh 91 thousand to Tk 2 lakh 59 thousand 500 to make the houses more durable and attractive.
He added that a total of 1,16,329 single houses have been constructed in the first and second phase of the project and 1,63,003 houses have been allotted till the current financial year 2021-2022. Till the current financial year, Tk.
Tofazzal Hossain Mia further said that under the third phase, about 1242 houses specially built for the char area have been allotted. The houses have been specially designed to be relocated considering any natural calamity like cyclone or flood. He said in addition to khas land, the government has bought 155 acres of land for the rehabilitation of the homeless and landless. The purchase of land by the government is a unique example in the world. On the occasion of Mujib Year, the government has recovered 5512.04 acres of khas land from illegal occupation across the country for construction of houses for these projects. The estimated market value of the recovered khas land is Tk 298.9 crore.
Under the Asrayan project, a total of 806,003 families have been rehabilitated since 1996 to the current financial year. The number of resettled people is 35,40,015 (approximately five persons in a family).
According to the project description, the unique feature of the Asrayan project, as per the idea of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is that there is a special connection of housing activities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Single house construction can play a major role in achieving various sustainable development goals. Housing relates to positive change in education, health, security, empowerment, women’s empowerment as well as inclusive development.
