POBNEWS24, Dhaka Nov 28, 2021 : Husband Shawkat Alam Talukder is contesting for the post of Union Parishad (UP) member and his wife Tahmina Akhter will be in charge of the polling station. When the three contesting candidates came to know about the matter, they went to the election official. The polling official has been removed in the face of pressure from candidates. The incident took place at Rangunia in Chittagong.
Elections for 13 unions are being held in Rangunia on Sunday. On the eve of the election, polling officer Tahmina was shifted from Hafezia Government Primary School polling station in Betagi Union to another polling station.
Speaking to locals, it is learned that four candidates including Shawkat Alam Talukder became candidates for the post of UP member in Ward No. 6 of Betagi Union of the upazila. Tahmina Akhter, Community Health Care Provider of Upazila Health Complex, has been given the charge of polling officer in the candidate’s own center in ward no. Later, three candidates contesting against Tahmina’s husband Shawkat Alam went to the office of the Upazila Election Officer and lodged a complaint on Saturday morning. In the evening, the polling officer was removed from his post at another polling station.
Nurul Azam, a candidate from Betagi Ward No. 6, complained, “In order to win over my rival candidate, the candidate’s wife was given the responsibility of polling officer in that center. We later accused the three candidates of removing the wife of the rival candidate from the center. Polling officer Tahmina Akhtar was shifted elsewhere following the allegations.
Upazila Election Officer. Bayazid Alam said, “The polling officer of that center has been removed and given to another center as the candidates complained. The list of most of the polling officials has been prepared and distributed in the election, it can be a little wrong to do so much.
