POBNEWS24, Dhaka July 16, 2025 : At least 4 people have been killed in Gopalganj, which has become a battlefield due to repeated attacks surrounding the march and rally of the Jatiya Nagorik Party-NCP.
Gopalganj General Hospital Superintendent Dr. Jibitesh Biswas told Ganashakti at 8 pm on Wednesday, “We have brought the bodies of 4 people here. The deceased are: Deepto Saha (30), son of Santosh Saha of Udayan Road in the city, Rajman Kazi (19), son of Kamrul Kazi of Harinahati village in Kotalipara, Sohel Rana (35) of Shanapara in the city, and Emon of Bherar Bazar area of Sadar upazila.
Meanwhile, the interim government has imposed a curfew in Gopalganj to control the situation after the massive clashes and attacks. This was announced in a message sent by the press wing on Wednesday evening.
The message said that the curfew will be imposed from 8 pm on Wednesday to 6 pm on Thursday. Earlier in the afternoon, the district administration had imposed Section 144 in the city to control the situation.
Earlier, on the way back from a meeting in Gopalganj, an NCP convoy was attacked in front of Gopalganj Government College in the Launch Ghat area of the city. At that time, Gopalganj turned into a battlefield. Police and army vehicles were also attacked.
After 2 pm Before the NCP meeting started at the open stage of the Municipal Park, an attack took place at the rally stage organized in the Municipal Park area of Gopalganj city at around 1:30 pm.
On the other hand, the besieged Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) leaders left Gopalganj safely under the tight security of the army and law enforcement agencies amid the heated situation.
Their convoy left the office of the Gopalganj District Superintendent of Police after 5 pm on Wednesday with the help of the army.
NCP Joint Member Secretary Mushfiqur Us Salehin confirmed this information. He said that they left Gopalganj after 5 pm.
Their convoy of 15 to 16 vehicles left Gopalganj under heavy guard. Among the NCP leaders in this convoy are NCP convener Nahid Islam, Akhtar Hossain, Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam and other top leaders.
Earlier, on the way to Madaripur, the NCP convoy was vandalized by Awami League and Chhatra League workers, Brick-throwing and attacks took place. Several people were injured and violence spread to the Gopalganj District Jail area.
Immediately after the incident, the police and army fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to control the situation. Later, the district administration imposed Section 144 in Gopalganj town.
The police could not confirm who carried out the attack till the filing of this report. However, the NCP alleged that the attack was carried out by activists of the defunct Awami League, Chhatra League and allied organizations.
The Left alliance, including the Bangladesh Workers’ Party, blamed the Yunus government’s failure for the incident.
The IG of Police told the media around 8 pm that the police did not use any weapons. However, it could not be confirmed who fired the shots.
