By Mir Afroz Zaman, POBNEWS24, DHAKA, Sept 2, 2026 : Adani Power has cut electricity supplies to Bangladesh from its 1,600-megawatt Godda power plant in India’s Jharkhand state, citing disruptions to coal transportation caused by heavy rail congestion and restrictions across the transport network.
The plant is currently supplying around 900MW during the day and 1,100MW during the evening peak, well below the 1,600MW contracted capacity, as inadequate coal deliveries have forced the company to temporarily adjust generation.
Adani Power informed the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) of the situation in a statement on Wednesday, saying the movement of coal-carrying rail rakes to the Godda plant had been disrupted by severe congestion on the railway network and multiple transport restrictions.
“As a result, coal is reaching the plant at levels below normal requirements,” the company said, adding that it was temporarily managing generation and electricity dispatch to cope with the shortfall.
The company said it was reducing supplies during periods of relatively low daytime demand while adjusting generation to maintain higher availability during the evening peak, when electricity demand in Bangladesh rises sharply.
Adani Power said it had informed the BPDB about the situation and was working closely with Indian Railways to restore normal coal supplies to the plant as quickly as possible.
It said measures were being taken to increase coal transportation and minimise the impact of the disruption on electricity supplies to Bangladesh.
The supply disruption at Godda comes amid wider coal-supply pressures affecting coal-fired power plants in eastern and central India. Heavy rainfall has contributed to lower coal stockpiles at several plants, raising concerns over fuel availability across the power-generation sector.
Bangladesh’s domestic coal-fired power plants have also been affected. One unit each at the Payra and Matarbari power plants is currently offline or operating at reduced capacity, adding to pressure on the country’s overall electricity generation.
Power and Energy State Minister Anindya Islam Amit told Parliament on Wednesday that Bangladesh had recently been receiving around 900MW from the Godda plant during the day and approximately 1,100MW during the evening peak, compared with the contracted 1,600MW.
Adani Power’s statement came as Bangladesh was receiving reduced supplies and provided the company’s explanation for the shortfall, attributing it to disruptions in the coal supply chain rather than a technical failure at the power plant.
The company expects the situation to improve as coal transportation conditions return to normal. Rainfall in India is forecast to be below normal in September, which could ease disruptions to coal movement.
Adani Power said that once coal supplies are restored to normal levels, generation at the Godda plant and electricity supplies to Bangladesh are expected to return to their normal levels.
