PONBEWS24, Dhaka, Desk report May 27,2024 : Due to the impact of Cyclone Rimal, the rain started in the southern districts of the country from Sunday and was pouring until the last news was received on Monday at 10 am. Low-lying areas are inundated by tidal water. Residents have suffered due to heavy rain and tidal water. Several districts remain without electricity. So far three deaths have been reported in Satkhira, Patuakhali and Bhola.
In Khulna: Heavy rain has flooded the lower areas of Khulna city. Trees have been uprooted in different areas of the city. Almost the entire Khulna city and district is without electricity. Due to the heavy rain that started yesterday Sunday night, various areas including Muzgunni, Saltachara, Mollapara, Tutpara, Mahirbari Canal Bank, Shipyard Road, Chanmari Bazar, Rupsa were submerged in water. There is still water on all those roads. It is raining with wind in Khulna city. Most of the shops in the city are closed. The roads are almost empty of vehicles and people.
In Barguna: Cyclone Rimal has caused high tides of five to seven feet above normal in three major rivers of Barguna. Many coastal villages including the district town were inundated by the tidal wave. 10-12 villages were flooded due to dam breach in Paler Baliatli of Sadar Upazila M Baliatli Union and Bawalkar area of Badarkhali Union.
In Bhola: Yesterday lakhs of people in the coastal area of Bhola spent a sleepless night in fear of being flooded by storm, rain and tidal water. In different areas of Bhola, stormy rain and gusty winds were more in the night than during the day yesterday. It is still raining and gusty.
In Satkhira: Due to heavy rain with gusty winds, some mud houses have collapsed, trees have been uprooted. Some shrimp were also washed away. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shyamnagar Police Station Abul Kalam Azad said that they removed fallen trees on the Shyamnagar-Kaliganj road throughout the night and kept the communication system open.
In Jessore: Due to storms and gusty winds, electricity has been cut off in various areas of the city since 12 pm yesterday. Electricity did not appear until 10:30 this morning. Gusty winds started blowing in Jessore city after 10 pm yesterday. When the wind speed increased around 12 midnight, the entire city lost electricity.
In Patuakhali: Five villages including Jalalpur, Christianpalli, Paschim Hajipur, Nabipur, Fatehpur of Nilganj union of Kalapara upazila have been flooded. At 12 o’clock last night, water overflowed from the flood control dam near Jalalpur village and entered the locality. Due to this, five villages here were flooded. The Kuakata beach area is still under six to seven feet of water.
In Bagerhat: Local residents say that they have never seen a cyclone with strong winds for such a long time.
