POBNEWS24, Dhaka Jan 12, 2025 : The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry summoned the Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to protest the BSF’s installation of barbed wire fence on the Bangladesh-India border in violation of international law. He appeared at the Foreign Ministry on Sunday afternoon to respond to the summons.
After concluding discussions with the Foreign Secretary at the ministry, the Indian High Commissioner told reporters, “
I just met Foreign Secretary to discuss India’s commitment to ensuring a crime free border, effectively addressing challenges of smuggling, movement of criminals and trafficking.
We have an understanding with regard to fencing the border for security. BSF and BGB have been in communication in this regard.
We expect that understandings will be implemented and there will be cooperative approach to combatting crime.
Recently, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) tried to install a barbed wire fence at the Chauka border in Chapainawabganj in violation of international law. In protest, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and locals took up positions on the border. Later, India suspended the construction work after a four-point flag meeting between BGB and BSF last week.
On Sunday, Home Affairs Advisor (retired) Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that Bangladesh will prevent India from erecting barbed wire fences on the border in violation of international law. He said, ‘India is erecting barbed wire fences in various places along the border in violation of international law. Bangladesh will prevent this activity. The Border Guard Force BGB will be in a strong position.’
It is worth noting that Bangladesh has a 2,216-kilometer border with West Bengal. 50 percent of which is unfenced.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had summoned Prannoy Verma on December 3 to protest the attack on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, the capital of the Indian state of Tripura.
