POBNEWS24, Dhaka, July 7, 2025 : The government has transferred or posted 76 police officers, including 11 Deputy Inspector Generals of Police, who were on duty as Officers on Special Duty (OSD) to different units. A notification in this regard was issued by the Public Security Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday (August 6).
There has been a discussion in the administrative circles about the sudden attachment of these officers of the rank of DIG, Additional DIG and Police Superintendent who are on OSD under the Public Security Department. This is because officers who are on OSD do not usually perform any specific duties. In this context, the question has arisen why those who were inactive in their jobs for so long were suddenly posted or attached to different police units of the country? Multiple sources in the Public Security Department said that these officers who were on OSD were mainly based in the capital Dhaka. During this break, they were divided into several groups and often held WhatsApp virtual meetings. Intelligence sources have revealed that some of these officers, who held important positions during the Sheikh Hasina government, used to discuss various issues opposing the current government in these meetings. In addition, the possibility of smuggling secret and important government documents out of the country by using their previous administrative connections is also being discussed in various circles. Throughout July 2024, these officers had followed the orders of the then Sheikh Hasina government to stop the July coup.
Sources said that in the context of these activities, 76 police officers who were OSD in the Public Security Department have been attached to different ranges, district police offices and units. The aim was that they should not all be involved in any secret meetings or conspiracies while staying in Dhaka. That is why they have been attached to different areas of the country.
A source said that the actual situation of the officers attached to the units is much like that of the officers on OSD. Such officers also have practically no work.
Meanwhile, some of those who have been newly attached to different units have been absconding since August 5 last year. A source in the ministry said that the complete list of absconding officers has not yet been provided to the Public Security Department from the police headquarters. That is why the names of some absconding officers may have been included in the list of 76.
However, the position of the police headquarters is different on this issue. A source in the headquarters said that they have already sent the list of absconding officers to the Public Security Department. The source claimed that a list of 43 absconding officers was also sent on July 24.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG-Media and PR) of the Police Headquarters AHM Shahadat Hossain said that the Home Ministry has decided to attach the officers who are on OSD. However, he said that the list of officers who are absent from work, absconding or in hiding has been sent to the ministry from the police headquarters.
Of the 76 officers attached to various units, 11 are of the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG). Among them, Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman has been posted to Rangpur Range, Miraj Uddin Ahmed and Md. Ilias Sharif to Sylhet Range, Md. Zakir Hossain Khan and Md. Shah Abid Hossain to Chittagong Range, Syed Nurul Islam to Rangpur Range, Jihadul Kabir to Chittagong Range, Md. Moniruzzaman to Sylhet Range, Md. Mahbubur Rahman to Khulna Range and Moinul Haque and S. M. Mostaq Ahmed Khan to Rajshahi Police Academy.
Soon after the fall of the Awami League government, many officers in important police positions were compulsorily retired or made Officers on Special Duty (OSD). A portion of them were later posted to various units.
