POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Mar 19, 2026 : In the last 18 months since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was expelled from Bangladesh on August 5, 2024 after a coup and took refuge in India,
Mob terrorism, extortion, kidnapping, murder, injuries and the harassment of extremists have increased drastically in Bangladesh. Although they were under control during the Sheikh Hasina government, they have increased now. The law and order forces including the police have failed to control them. Those criminal incidents are happening one after another.
On Thursday morning, miscreants entered a house in the Khadijabagh Krishnanagar Thikarabad area of Batiaghata upazila of Khulna and opened fire on four members of the same family. Since the condition of two of the injured persons is critical, they have been sent to Dhaka from Khulna Medical College Hospital.
The injured are Kazi Anisur Rahman, his wife Ranjuara Begum, son Raisul Islam and younger son Rashidul Islam’s wife Fahima. Among them, Ranjuara Begum and Fahima have been taken to Dhaka for better treatment.
Police and local sources said that Anisur’s younger son Rashidul went to jail about three years ago in a case. There he met a person named Imran. Later, Rashidul and Imran’s family got in touch with him through that source. At one stage, Rashidul developed a relationship with Imran’s wife Fahima. About six months ago, Imran went to jail again in a case and Rashidul married Fahima. It is alleged that Imran was trying to take revenge after being angry over the incident. Around 6:30 in the morning, a group of miscreants entered the house and opened fire at the family members. Later, local people rescued the injured and took them to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Mukta Akhter (21) went to a tailor’s shop with her husband. After returning home with clothes, she went out again to do some last-minute shopping. But that outing turned out to be her ‘last journey of life’. While riding a rickshaw, the kidnapper suddenly pulled her bag and Mukta fell. The seriously injured Mukta was taken to several hospitals before being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She was declared dead there in the afternoon.
On Thursday, around 9:30 am, Mukta was sitting in a moving auto-rickshaw in the capital’s Uttara area. On the way to the House Building Market, a private car suddenly stopped near her in the middle of the metro rail station. Within moments, the kidnappers reached out and pulled her bag.
Mukta fell from the moving auto-rickshaw onto the road after being pulled by the bag. She was rescued in a seriously injured condition, first at the local Bangladesh Medical Center, then at one hospital after another, to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. But all the doctors’ efforts failed and she died at around 2 pm.
In the 90s, extremists dominated Bangladesh so much that they created a separate state within the state. At that time, most of the educated unemployed youth joined extremist parties due to the dominance of power and greed. Among the extremists, there were several powerful organizations including the proletariat, Bangladesh East Bengal Communist Party, Haq Group, and Red Flag. These organizations believed in leftist politics and although their political ideology was different, they were all united in the ideology of “some on the tenth floor, some on the tree floor, it will not happen, everyone has equal rights”. However, some organizations got involved in various misdeeds to expand their dominance and collect sugarcane. As this continued, at one point all the organizations started attacking and killing their opponents regularly to expand their dominance, as a result of which they became isolated from the people and started atrocities on the common people. At this time, extremist organizations were banned. Extremists in Kushtia, Chujadanga, Meherpur, Jessore, Jhenaidah, Narail areas became more and more reckless and eventually they started attacking police stations and police outposts, looting weapons and robbing various bank branches. The government’s concern about them continued to grow. Then Sheikh Hasina’s government launched a special operation across the country and through this operation, extremist leaders and members from all over the country were killed or arrested in the crossfire by RAB. Since then, the extremist members have gone into hiding and are no longer seen. Currently, the people of Kushtia are again afraid of extremists. They are constantly seen armed in various Balumahals of the district. A few days ago, extremists shot the manager of Balumahal in Kaya Union of the district and looted money. They demanded a large sum of money from big businessmen and contractors of the district and threatened to kill them. In all, the triple murder that took place in the border area of Jhenaidah and Kushtia districts is one of the most common among the extremists who were shot dead since August 5.
However, since Sheikh Hasina was deported, they have started roaming in Bangladesh again. At one time, the kidnappers were reckless, and they robbed in broad daylight. Many people have died from their stab wounds. Currently, there is extreme unrest in the public mind because those criminals are on the rise. The incident in Khulna, the capital Uttara, has shaken the conscience of the people.
The people say, ‘Now that Sheikh Mujib’s daughter Sheikh Hasina is no more, the criminals of the past will be reckless’.
