POBNEWS24, Bandarban May 24, 2026 : Three Chakma workers were killed in a powerful landmine explosion at the Ghumdhum border in Naikshongchhari upazila of Bandarban, a remote hilly district in Bangladesh. Panic has gripped the entire border area after the incident.
The explosion took place around 11:30 am on Sunday in the area between border pillars 41 and 42, a part of the border inside Bangladesh.
According to local sources, news of three people being injured in the area after the explosion quickly spread. Later, a rescue team of locals left for the spot. When they reached the spot around 2:30 pm, they found the three people lying dead.
The deceased are – Layara (41) son of Sunyang Chakma of Bhalukiapara village of ward number 8 of Ghumdhum union, Onkemong (50) son of deceased Neomong Chakma and Chinka Aung (40) son of Aimong Chakma.
Locals believe that they died in the explosion of a powerful landmine planted by the Myanmar rebel group Arkan Army on the border.
Local sources also said that the deceased were victims of the accident when they went to work in a banana plantation in the area. Another source said that they were involved in smuggling smuggled goods. They were caught in the incident while trying to bring drugs that day.
Naikshongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Enamul Hasan and Naikshongchhari Police Station OC Mozammel Haque confirmed the matter and said that the arrival of the bodies is delayed as it is a border area. Rescue operations are underway. Locals including BGB and watchmen are at the scene.
Local residents have issued a warning to the general public to avoid risky areas near the border. A BGB team is conducting necessary activities including inspecting the scene and collecting detailed information.
