POBNEWS24,Dhaka, Aug 27, 2026 : The 50th death anniversary of Bangladesh’s national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is today, Thursday. The poet of treachery and communism, Kazi Nazrul Islam, passed away on this day at the Bangladesh Medical University (former PG Hospital) in Dhaka.
The Nazrul Institute has organized a discussion meeting titled ‘Mrityunjayee Nazrul’, a prayer meeting and a hymn-nat today to mark the death anniversary of the poet, who is resting in eternal sleep at the tomb adjacent to the Central Mosque of Dhaka University. Apart from this, various programs are also being held on behalf of various institutions and organizations.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on the 11th day of the 1306th year of the Bangabhab (May 25, 1899) in the village of Churulia in Burdwan district of West Bengal. His nickname was ‘Dukhu Mia’. He grew up facing severe poverty since childhood.
Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was creative for only 23 years. Nazrul’s literary works of these 23 years are a priceless treasure of Bengali language and literature. His literary works have taken Bengali to unique heights.
Poet Nazrul’s poems, songs and literary works created a renaissance in Bengali literature. His poems and songs have been showing people the way to freedom from exploitation and deprivation for ages. At the same time, he was also a poet of eternal love.
After the independence of Bangladesh, on May 24, 1972, at the initiative of the then government, with the permission of the Indian government, poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was brought to Bangladesh with his family. He was given the status of National Poet. The poet was given a house in Dhanmondi in the capital with state residence.
Dhaka University awarded the poet the honorary title of D-Lit in 1974. In 1976, the Bangladesh government granted the poet Bangladeshi citizenship. On February 21 of the same year, the poet was awarded the Ekushey Padak.
Programme on the death anniversary of the national poet
The Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has organized a two-day discussion and cultural program on the occasion of the 50th death anniversary of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The program will be inaugurated at the National Theatre Auditorium of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 6:30 pm today. A cultural program will be held at the National Music and Dance Center Auditorium on Friday at 6:30 pm. The program titled ‘Amar Debo Na Bhulite…’ includes discussions on the life, literature and works of the national poet, music and dance performances.
On the other hand, the Nazrul Academy has a three-day program. This morning, in addition to reciting Fateha and paying floral tributes at the tomb of the national poet adjacent to the Dhaka University Central Mosque, the Nazrul Academy will hold a Milad Mahfil at the mosque adjacent to the tomb of the poet after Zohar. Tomorrow at 5:30 pm, a discussion and cultural program has been organized at the ‘Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium’ of the Nazrul Academy in Belalabad Colony, Moghbazar. The closing ceremony of the three-day event will be held at the same auditorium on August 29 at 5:30 pm.
