Dinesh Trivedi is India’s new High Commissioner to Bangladesh

POBNEWS24 Dhaka Apr 28, 2026 : The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a press release on Monday that Dinesh Trivedi will soon take charge as the High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
Dinesh Trivedi will replace Prannoy Verma in Dhaka. Prannoy Verma has already been appointed as India’s Ambassador to Belgium.
Prannoy Verma, a professional diplomat, had been serving as India’s High Commissioner to Dhaka since September 2022. He has been appointed as India’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union (EU). 75-year-old Dinesh Trivedi is taking over. He was a former member of parliament from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress party.
Although he belongs to a Gujarati business family, Dinesh Trivedi can speak good Bengali. According to party sources, he is being sent to Bangladesh because of his good relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, long political experience, and clear understanding of the cultural ties between Bengalis and Bengal. In India’s diplomatic tradition, experienced Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officers are usually appointed to such posts. Dinesh Trivedi is an exception. Dinesh was once Mamata Banerjee’s ambassador in all-India politics.
