POBNEWS24, Dhaka April 6, 2025 : The national parliamentary elections in Bangladesh will be held in April 2026, said Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He made the announcement in his address to the nation on Friday.
The Chief Advisor said, ‘I am announcing to the countrymen today that the next national elections will be held on any day in the first half of April 2026. Based on this announcement, the Election Commission will provide you with a detailed roadmap for the elections at an appropriate time.’
Dr. Yunus said, ‘There is great interest among political parties and the people to know the decision on when the next national elections will be held. I have repeatedly said that these elections will be held between December and June next year. The government is doing whatever needs to be done to create an environment conducive to elections in the country during this period.’
Stating that the main reason for all the times Bangladesh has plunged into deep crises since independence was flawed elections, he said, ‘A political party has become a barbaric fascist by repeatedly amassing power through flawed election processes. Those who organize such elections are identified as criminals by the nation. The party that comes to power through such elections is also hated by the people.’
Dr. Yunus also said, ‘A major responsibility of this government is to hold an election in a clean, festive, peaceful, and massively participating environment. To organize an election so that the country does not fall into a new crisis in the future. For this, institutional reform is the most important thing. If good governance cannot be ensured in the institutions that are directly involved in elections, then all the sacrifices of the students and the public will be in vain.’
Stating that the government has taken responsibility based on these three mandates of reform, justice, and elections, the Chief Advisor said, ‘I believe that we will be able to reach an acceptable point regarding reform and justice by the upcoming Eid al-Fitr. We can see visible progress, especially in the trial of crimes against humanity – which is our collective responsibility towards the martyrs of the July mass uprising.
He said, “Today I am announcing to the countrymen that the next national election will be held on any day in the first half of April 2026. Based on this announcement, the Election Commission will provide you with a detailed roadmap for the election at an appropriate time. We want an election that will satisfy the souls of the martyrs of the uprising and bring peace to their souls. We want the largest number of voters, the largest number of candidates and parties to participate in the next election. Let it be remembered by the nation as the most free, fair and impartial election.”
Stating that a truly people’s representative parliament would be formed in the country after a century and a half, he said, “A large group of young people will get the opportunity to vote for the first time in their lives. We are committed to the nation to take all necessary steps towards these goals. “I urge the countrymen to obtain specific commitments from all political parties and candidates in your constituencies to approve, without any compromise, the reforms on which consensus has been reached in the first session of the next parliament.”
