POBNEWS24, Kolkata Mar 14, 2026 : Philip Sangma, who is accused of helping the killers of Inquilab Manch convener Sharif Osman bin Hadi cross the border to India, has been arrested.
Members of the West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF) arrested him from the Shantipur Bypass area of Nadia district, West Bengal, India, early Saturday morning.
Police sources said that Faisal Masud Karim and Alamgir Sheikh were recently arrested from Bangaon in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal on charges of killing Hadi. STF sources said that the name of Philip Sangma came up after questioning the Faisals. He lived in Haluaghat, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Faisal and Alamgir contacted Philip after their names were implicated in the Hadi murder. With his help, Faisal and Alamgir illegally crossed the border and entered Meghalaya.
Police said that Philip Sangma was arrested early Saturday morning from the area adjacent to the Shantipur bypass after receiving information from a secret source. During interrogation, he confessed that he illegally allowed people to cross the Haluaghat border in Bangladesh and the Dalupara border in Meghalaya in exchange for money. Similarly, the Faisals also left Bangladesh with his help.
When the search for the accused in the Hadi-Khun case started in Bangladesh, Philip also crossed the Haluaghat-Dalupara border to India. During interrogation, Philip Sangma said that he had traveled to different parts of India in the past few days. He had also changed his residence repeatedly. However, Philip had recently planned to return to Bangladesh. The Faisals also had the same plan. However, all three were arrested by the West Bengal police before that. Philip Sangma was produced in court today. The police took him into custody on the court’s orders.
Hadi, 32, was shot dead in Dhaka last December. The young Bangladeshi leader later died in a hospital in Singapore. Bangladesh was in turmoil over Hadi’s death. The chargesheet filed by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) in the Hadi murder case identified Faisal and Alamgir as the ‘main accused’.
