POBNEWS24, Dhaka June 20, 2026 : Bangladesh Prime Minister Tareque Rahman is leaving for China and Malaysia on Sunday with the possibility of signing 15 to 17 bilateral agreements including the much-discussed Teesta project of Bangladesh. This is the Prime Minister’s first national visit after the BNP government took power.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam gave this information at a press conference organized at the Foreign Ministry on Saturday.
He said that a total of 15 to 17 bilateral agreements including 13 memorandums of understanding, two agreements, an action plan and a protocol are expected to be signed between Bangladesh and China.
In response to a question, the Foreign Secretary said that the Teesta project will also be discussed during the visit.
Prime Minister Tareque Rahman will leave Dhaka for Kuala Lumpur tomorrow afternoon at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Then on Monday afternoon, he will visit China at the invitation of Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang.
Siam said that this is the Prime Minister’s first foreign visit after the government took office in February this year.
The Foreign Secretary also said that this visit is being seen as an important diplomatic initiative to strengthen Bangladesh’s economic partnership, attract foreign investment and increase regional connectivity.
Prime Minister Tareque Rahman will hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on June 25.
In addition, he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 26.
In addition, the Prime Minister will participate in the 17th Annual Conference of New Champions (Summer Davos Forum) to be held in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China from June 23 to 25.
Organized under the theme of Innovating at Scale, the forum will be attended by more than 1,700 representatives from more than 90 countries and regions. There, global economic trends, technological advancements and innovation-driven growth will be discussed.
The visit to Malaysia will focus on expanding trade, cooperation in the labor market and increasing investment opportunities. On the other hand, the Foreign Secretary mentioned that Bangladesh’s commitment to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, technology, connectivity and development sectors will be highlighted during the visit to China.
Additional Secretary (Diplomacy and Other Priority Issues) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs AKM Shahidul Karim and many others from the ministry were present at the briefing.
It is known that Bangladesh has had a long-standing dispute with India over the Teesta project in the geopolitical context.
