POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Apr 8, 2026 : Tarique Rahman is going to India on his first state visit after taking charge as Prime Minister. The visit may take place by the 10th of next month. Delhi is working towards that goal. Discussions are also underway that three important bilateral agreements may be signed during the Prime Minister’s first visit. A reliable source in the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry confirmed this information.
Sources said that the Indian government is giving special importance to the visit of new Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to build trusting relations with Dhaka. The Prime Minister’s wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman are also being specially invited to the visit. India is preparing to welcome Tarique Rahman and his family like the hospitality extended to US President Donald Trump to make the visit of the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina memorable.
Several responsible sources say that after the August 5 uprising, Bangladesh’s relations with India became bitter in various ways during the interim government. In view of this, the two countries also took tough decisions on some issues. India wants to melt that ice and show a unique example of friendship to Tarique Rahman to deepen the relations between Dhaka and Delhi. Therefore, India wants to make their visit dignified. The importance is being given to the visit of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh as it was during the visit of the US President to India. During the visit, Trump stayed at the luxurious five-star hotel ‘ITC Maurya’ in Delhi with his family. Arrangements are being made for Tarique Rahman and his family to stay there. By giving the utmost importance to the visit of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Delhi wants to create a new equation in the regional politics of South Asia and send a message of increasing economic cooperation.
Some sources in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that after taking office as the Prime Minister, there was a discussion of going to Nepal first and then to Saudi Arabia to perform the holy Umrah. That plan has been changed. Initially, Delhi prepared for Tarique Rahman’s visit to India this month (April). But due to elections in various states in India, the time was postponed. The finalization and official announcement will be made any day before May 10.
Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Pranay Kumar Verma met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday (April 6). Sources said that during the meeting, the Prime Minister’s visit to India and three important agreements were discussed. Although details about the issues discussed were not known, the $2 billion aid package and the Ganges water sharing agreement were heard.
Sources also said that among the issues discussed, a decision on an aid package worth about $2 billion (about 24,000 crore taka in Bangladeshi currency) is in the final stages. India has responded positively to the Ganges water sharing agreement.
In addition, amid the global energy crisis, the need for diesel for irrigation water will increase this year’s rainy season. Bangladesh wants to use the opportunity of Delhi’s invitation to import more diesel from India. The matter has also been conveyed to India.
The new government’s Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman left for his first official visit to India on Tuesday, the day after the Indian High Commissioner met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Multiple sources have confirmed that Tarique Rahman’s visit to India has already been finalized after meetings at various levels of the Indian government. A formal announcement in this regard may come in a day or two.
Tarique Rahman’s wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman are expected to be present during his visit. Diplomatic sources have confirmed that he will be specially invited by the Indian government.
In addition, a diplomatic source in Dhaka said that the list of those who will accompany the Bangladeshi Prime Minister to India is also being finalized. Initially, the list includes Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Abdul Awal Mintoo, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Minister of Water Resources Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie and State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad. It is also known that some business representatives may also accompany the tour.
