7 fishing trawlers sink in rough waves in Bay of Bengal, 48 fishermen rescued alive

POBNEWS24 Hatia (Noakhali), Aug 12, 2026 : Seven fishing trawlers sank in the Bay of Bengal due to severe weather and rough waves. So far, 48 fishermen have been rescued alive in this accident. However, the upazila administration has confirmed that no fishermen are missing.
A video of the incident went viral on social media on Wednesday afternoon. Earlier, on Wednesday afternoon, 7 fishing trawlers sank in Hatia, Dwip Upazila of Noakhali.
Of these, four trawlers sank in the sea south of Nijhum Dwip, one trawler in the Meghna River adjacent to Kazir Bazar Ghat and two trawlers in the Meghna River adjacent to Chairman Ghat.
According to local sources and the Trawler Owners Association, seven fishing trawlers sank on Wednesday afternoon due to rough seas and rivers due to strong winds and waves. Other fishing trawlers that were nearby at the time of the accident quickly came forward and rescued 48 fishermen alive from the sinking trawlers. The owners of the trawlers that sank in Nijhum Island are Nasir Majhi, Zahir Majhi and Zahed Majhi of Jahaj Mara Union.
Nishan Chowdhury, the owner of Zahir Majhi’s trawler, said that due to rough seas, three of the four trawlers that were involved in the accident have completely sunk. Nasir Majhi’s trawler is still floating in the sea. Efforts are underway to rescue the trawler.
Hatia Upazila Executive Officer Russell Iqbal said that the trawler sank due to rough weather. However, everyone was rescued alive.
