POBNEWS24, Dhaka Dec 27, 2025 : Law enforcement agencies have arrested the wife of the director of the madrasa, Al Amin Sheikh alias Rajib, in connection with the explosion in the single-storey building of Hasnabad Ummal Kura International Madrasa in South Keraniganj, Dhaka. Al-Amin is a member of the Tamim Sarwar Group of the banned militant organization Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). His home is in Mollarhat, Bagerhat district. They had been living in the house in Keraniganj with their family and running the madrasa for the past three years.
After the explosion at South Ummal Kura International Madrasa on Friday, law enforcement agencies recovered several explosives and bomb-making equipment from the scene. In addition, police took the wife of the director of the madrasa, Al-Amin, into custody. According to the information given by her during interrogation, it was found that Al-Amin was involved in bomb-making activities behind the madrasa. Al-Amin has been absconding since the blast.
Al-Amin, his wife Acia Begum and their two children, Umayet and Abdullah, were staying at their home when the blast occurred at the madrasa building on Friday afternoon. His wife and two children were injured in the incident and were first taken to a local hospital. Later, when their condition deteriorated, the doctor on duty sent them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
According to local sources, a loud explosion occurred around noon. Within moments, the walls around the building were blown away. The walls of two rooms in the one-story building completely collapsed and cracks appeared in the roof and beams. Two other rooms nearby also cracked. In addition, the walls and windows of an adjacent building were also partially damaged.
Educational activities were conducted in three rooms on one side of the madrasa building. Director Sheikh Al Amin had been living in a room on the other side with his family for the past three years. About 50 students studied at the madrasa. However, the madrasa was closed as Friday was a holiday. As a result, there were no major casualties.
Earlier in 2017, RAB arrested JMB member Sheikh Al-Amin and two others from Baktavali under Fatullah police station in Narayanganj district. At that time, RAB reported recovering a foreign pistol, a foreign revolver, 5 rounds of bullets, 2 knives, explosives, jihadi books and leaflets from them. A source confirmed that banned organizations JMB, Harkatul Jihad and Ansarullah Bangla Team are very active in Mymensingh, Sherpur, Morelganj in Bagerhat and Sundarbans in Satkhira district of Bangladesh. The previous Awami League government had declared zero tolerance towards these banned groups. The source mentioned that the involvement of JMB in the Keraniganj incident is indicative of that.
