POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Aug 13, 2026 : The party has finalized the candidacy of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the BNP candidate for the 23rd presidential election of Bangladesh.
His name was finalized in an emergency meeting of the party’s top leaders on Thursday. Earlier, an emergency meeting of the party began at the secretariat under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. Top and senior BNP leaders participated in the meeting. It was there that it was decided to nominate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the party’s candidate for the presidential post.
After the meeting, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed the matter to the media. He said that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has already resigned from the party’s Secretary General and Standing Committee member to run for the presidency.
The post of President fell vacant after former President Mohammad Shahabuddin resigned on July 24. After his resignation, Speaker of the National Assembly Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is serving as the acting President. Since the presidential post fell vacant, the name of BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was in discussion as a possible candidate. Finally, the party’s decision finalized his candidacy.
According to the Election Commission’s schedule, the time for submitting nomination papers for the post of President was scheduled from 10 am to 4 pm on August 13. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be done from 10 am on August 16 at the Election Commission building. The last time for withdrawal of candidacy is 4 pm on August 18.
If there are multiple candidates, voting will be held in the session room of the National Assembly building on August 20. Members of parliament will vote from 2 pm to 5 pm on that day. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has called a special meeting of the National Assembly on this occasion.
