Former AL MP Jawaherul’s body handed over through Petrapole-Benapole border

POBNEWS24, Benapole Petrapole, Mar 2, 2026 : Former MP from Tangail-8 constituency and District Awami League General Secretary Jawaherul Islam (72) died while undergoing treatment in Kolkata. Indian police handed over his body to Bangladesh.
His body was sent back to the country through Petrapole check post in India through Benapole in Jessore at around 10:30 pm on Sunday under special arrangements.
This information was confirmed by Benapole International Check Post Immigration Inspector (Investigation) Syed Mortaza.
Jawaherul Islam was born in Berbari village of Sakhipur upazila of Tangail district. His father’s name is Paran Ali Mia.
He died last Friday at a private hospital named Phoenix Medical Center Private Limited in Dumdum, Kolkata. He was admitted to the hospital a week ago after being ill for a long time and was on life support.
Jawaherul Islam’s younger brother Atwar Rahman said that after August 5 last year, Md. Jawaherul Islam went to India illegally and started living in Newtown, Kolkata. The former MP was staying in Newtown with his family. He died on Friday of multi-organ failure and a heart attack.
Jawaherul Islam took charge as the general secretary of Tangail district Awami League in 2017.
At the time of his death, Jawaherul Islam was with his wife and a daughter. His wife was staying in Kolkata on a medical visa, relatives said.
