POBNEWS24, Dhaka Jan 26: Former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman and three others have been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity committed in the capital’s Chankhar Pul area during the July Uprising.
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, gave the verdict on Monday. The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder read out the verdict. The verdict sentenced former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty and former Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ramna region Shah Alam Md. The tribunal sentenced Akhtarul Islam to death. The assets of the three accused have also been confiscated.
In the verdict, former assistant commissioner of DMP Ramna region Mohammad Imrul has been sentenced to six years in prison. Former inspector of Shahbagh police station Md. Arshad Hossain has been sentenced to four years in prison by the tribunal. And former constables Md. Sujan Hossain, Imaz Hossain and Md. Nasirul Islam have been sentenced to three years in prison each.
Four of the accused in the case are absconding. They are Habibur, Sudip, Akhtarul and Imrul. Arshad, Sujan, Imaz and Nasirul are under arrest.
This is the second verdict in a case related to crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising. Earlier, the first verdict came from the tribunal on November 17 last year. In that verdict, ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan were sentenced to death. The other accused in the case, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, was sentenced to five years in prison. Mamun confessed to his crime and became an approver (a witness) in the case. The verdict in the first case also came from Tribunal-1.
