POBNEWS24, Desk report New Delhi, Jul 4, 2026 : During this visit, India is keeping an eye on the course of Bangladesh-China relations. India is also keeping an eye on the possible impact of the talks held during that visit on the creation of an economic corridor between China, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Several questions were raised about the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s visit to China at the weekly briefing of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Friday. In response, ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “India closely monitors any developments in neighboring countries and takes necessary measures at the right time.”
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid a three-day state visit to China late last month. During his visit, cooperation between the two countries in various fields was discussed.
In his talks with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed to create an economic corridor from Bangladesh to China via Myanmar to increase connectivity and economic reach. Later, in response to journalists’ questions on this matter, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said, “Bangladesh is currently conducting experiments with China’s proposed corridor. However, we have not taken any position yet.”
A journalist asked at a briefing in New Delhi, “During the Prime Minister’s visit, Bangladesh has shown interest in purchasing several fighter jets from China for the first time. What is India’s attitude on this matter?” In response, Randhir Jaiswal said, “India monitors everything that is discussed in these cases. Whenever necessary, steps are taken.” The spokesperson, however, did not comment on whether such initiatives pose a security risk to India.
Various Indian media outlets reported that during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to China, discussions were held on purchasing Bangladesh’s J-10C fighter jets from the country. However, neither Bangladesh nor China has officially said anything on this matter.
In response to a question on this matter at a press conference in Dhaka on Thursday, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen also did not comment.
The press conference brought up the issue of discussions between the two countries on the Teesta project and the development of Mongla port during Tarique Rahman’s visit to China. Asked about India’s reaction on this, Randhir Jaiswal said, “The issue of Indian assistance for the development of various projects in Bangladesh is based on discussions between the two countries. That roadmap is regularly reviewed. Bangladesh has been informed of India’s stance on the Teesta river project in advance. Any progress in this regard will be considered comprehensively.”
