POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Mar 1, 2026 : Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma also met Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman separately at their respective offices on Sunday.
At the time, Pranay Verma expressed India’s interest in working together with the new government of Bangladesh to strengthen people-centric cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, including security cooperation, on the basis of mutual welfare and mutual sensitivity.
It is worth noting that India is a neighboring friendly country of Bangladesh. If India had not supported the freedom fighters of Bangladesh in 1971, the country would not have become independent.
India had to lose many officers and soldiers to play the role of an allied force in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. In 1971, the number of Indian soldiers martyred on the eastern and western fronts together was 3630, 213 missing and 9856 injured. Their blood is mixed in the soil of this independent Bangladesh. India’s role as a neighboring country in the liberation war in Bangladesh is unforgettable.
In the great liberation war of 1971, India sheltered about one crore refugees from Bangladesh. It is known that till November 1971, the total number of Bangladeshi refugees in India was 98,99,305. Most of these refugees took shelter in government-run refugee camps. However, a significant number of refugees took shelter in the homes of various relatives. However, the largest number of refugee camps were in West Bengal (492), Tripura (276), apart from these places, refugee camps were located in Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh of India. Where a large number of Bangladeshi refugees took shelter.
