POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Sept 8, 2025 : The body of renowned writer, educationist, intellectual and leftist politician Badruddin Umar was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital at 10 am on Monday. People from all walks of life, from writers, politicians, researchers, journalists, academicians to professionals, paid floral tributes there.
Intellectual and thinker Farhad Mazhar paid tribute to renowned writer, teacher and politician Badruddin Umar.
Later, he said, Badruddin Umar will always be remembered. A lot can be learned from the footprints he left behind. Many people thought that the Marxist and revolutionary trend had ended, but that is not true. In the recent political developments in Bangladesh, especially on August 5, there have been clear signs of the revival of this trend.
Farhad Mazhar further said that that trend is still alive and active within the political forces of Bangladesh.
After paying tribute, Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Advisor Sharmin S Murshid said that an important chapter in the country’s history has ended with the departure of Badruddin Umar. In the light of the ideals and philosophy that he was the bearer of, his analysis will remain an invaluable asset in history. He was a strong-willed, idealistic and uncompromising personality. His absence will be deeply felt. However, the books he wrote will be a guide for future generations.
Professor Dr., Education Advisor to the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Interim Government Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Cultural Affairs Advisor Mostafa Sarwar Farooqui, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar, BNP Joint Secretary General Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel, PIB Director General Faruk Wasif, Bangla Academy Director General Mohammad Azam, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director Mahbub Morshed, Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam and leaders of various political, social and cultural organizations paid tribute.
After the tribute, his funeral was held at Dhaka University Central Mosque after Zohr. He was later buried at Jurain Graveyard.
National Liberation Council President Badruddin Umar was born on December 20, 1931 in Burdwan, India. He died at 10:05 am on Sunday at the Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in the capital due to various complications of old age. He was 94 years old at the time of his death.
The death of Badruddin Umar has cast a shadow of deep sorrow over the country’s intellectual community.
