It is worth noting that after the bloody mass protests in August last year, the interim government took charge at the will of the students and the public, a new political party, NCP, was formed by the students who led the movement. On August 5, the anniversary of the July uprising, five top leaders of the NCP suddenly went to Cox’s Bazar. Rumors spread that they were holding a secret meeting with former US Ambassador Peter Haas at Hotel Sea Pearl. This caused a stir across Bangladesh. However, a source in Washington confirmed at the time that Peter Haas was not in Bangladesh, but was staying in Washington. However, this time, ending the speculation, Peter Haas was indeed in Cox’s Bazar.
Peter Haas was always in the news for various reasons during his time as ambassador to Bangladesh. He retired from the US Foreign Service on September 27, just days before the July-August protests of last year, after completing his tour of duty in Bangladesh. Just three days later, on October 1, he joined Accelerate Energy, a US multinational liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter with investments in Bangladesh. The company operates a floating LNG terminal in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar.
