POBNEWS24, Dhaka Sept 3, 2025 : Former US Ambassador Peter Haas went to Cox’s Bazar from Dhaka on a one-day visit. After landing in Cox’s Bazar, he went to Maheshkhali. At that time, KM Atiqul Islam and Mohammad Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan were with him.
He arrived at Cox’s Bazar Airport at around 10 am on Wednesday (September 3) on a US Bangla Airlines flight.
Earlier, former US Ambassador Peter D. Haas arrived in Bangladesh for a week-long visit last Saturday (August 30).
It is learned that the three including Peter Haas reached Cox’s Bazar from Dhaka and went to Maheshkhali from the airport by speedboat from the BIWTA ghat in Nuniarachara in the city. After reaching Maheshkhali, they were joined by officials from Hope Foundation and Shakti Foundation. Later, the delegation from Maheshkhali Jetty Ghat reached Nayapara in Kutubjom Union of the upazila. At that time, the Bangladesh Country Director of Hope Foundation welcomed them there.
OC of Maheshkhali Police Station Md. Manjurul Haque said that they visited the Accelerate Hope Hospital built by Hope Foundation and Accelerate Energy in Nayapara and met with the hospital officials in discussion. Later, a tree plantation program was inaugurated there and Peter de Haas planted saplings.
Later, the delegation visited the free medical camp initiated by Shakti Foundation at the auditorium of Boro Maheshkhali Notunbazar Government Primary School in the upazila. At that time, Mohammad Kamruzzaman, Head of Field Operation of Shakti Foundation, welcomed the delegation. At that time, he inquired about the activities of Shakti Foundation and the medical camp.
Later, the delegation visited the Adinath Temple area of Maheshkhali and left Maheshkhali by river via Maheshkhali Adinath Jetty Ghat at around 2:30 pm.
A police team from Maheshkhali Police Station was there to protect him during the inspection.
A reliable source said that he returned to Dhaka from Cox’s Bazar Airport on US Bangla Airlines flight BS-158 on Wednesday evening.
It is worth noting that after the bloody mass protests in August last year, the interim government took charge at the will of the students and the public, a new political party, NCP, was formed by the students who led the movement. On August 5, the anniversary of the July uprising, five top leaders of the NCP suddenly went to Cox’s Bazar. Rumors spread that they were holding a secret meeting with former US Ambassador Peter Haas at Hotel Sea Pearl. This caused a stir across Bangladesh. However, a source in Washington confirmed at the time that Peter Haas was not in Bangladesh, but was staying in Washington. However, this time, ending the speculation, Peter Haas was indeed in Cox’s Bazar.
Peter Haas was always in the news for various reasons during his time as ambassador to Bangladesh. He retired from the US Foreign Service on September 27, just days before the July-August protests of last year, after completing his tour of duty in Bangladesh. Just three days later, on October 1, he joined Accelerate Energy, a US multinational liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter with investments in Bangladesh. The company operates a floating LNG terminal in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar.
